A close to £1 m fire safety system upgrade at Newham University Hospital has won fire installation specialist, M&G Fire Protection, a ‘highly accredited’ fire system installation company, the award for ‘Fire Safety Installation Company of the Year’ at the 2024 Fire & Security Matters awards.
The company, owned by industry specialist, Steve Middleton, was honoured for completing a complex network wiring upgrade to support the hospital’s current fire system and future upgrades. The old system couldn’t be expanded, and transmission times needed to be faster. M&G worked alongside the Trust’s project team to design a new network of 98 Advanced MXpro 5 panels, while keeping the existing system live. Its team aligned the cause and effect, zoning, and alarm zones with HTM 05-03 Part B and the fire strategy. Given the long-term nature of the upgrades, M&G designed the network to integrate future elements seamlessly, which necessitated its team reviewing the entire complex site.
Newham University Hospital is large acute facility with A&E and Maternity Departments, so the main corridors or critical wards are always open and busy, making the project challenging. After seven months, the project was handed over. The Senior Project manager from Turner and Townsend said: “The team worked in harmony with the hospital’s day-to-day activities, and we cannot thank them enough for their hard work. We congratulate them on a highly well-delivered project which our client Barts Health NHS Trust was happy with.”
M&G Fire Protection – which in January celebrated 25 years of protecting life and property across London and Essex – offers fire safety solutions for small- and large-scale projects. Its services include designing, installing, commissioning, and maintaining fire systems, smoke control systems, and fire extinguishers, with fire damper services available nationwide.
