Assisting de-escalation through product design

Isabel Ferreira, Global head of Products at Pineapple Contracts, which manufactures and supplies ‘mindfully designed furniture for transforming challenging environments’, discusses the positive impact of good product design in assisting de-escalation, minimising feelings of anxiety, and helping to create a calmer, more therapeutic environment and return some autonomy to service-users in a variety of mental healthcare settings.

Mental health environments are critical spaces supporting individuals in their healing and recovery journeys. Given this factor, the design of these spaces holds tremendous importance, not just in terms of safety and recovery, but also as regards functionality, aesthetics, and overall psychological impact.

As part of managing the safety of service-users and staff, one of the key challenges in mental healthcare facilities is preventing and controlling episodes of heightened emotional or behavioural distress, which makes aiding de-escalation a practical goal of both architectural and product design. The physical environment's influence on service-users' psychological wellbeing and behaviour means that thoughtful design choices promoting a therapeutic atmosphere can contribute to calming patients, reducing stress and anxiety, and ultimately preventing crises. In this context, along with the architectural design, product design has a role to play in creating a safe space that provides comfort and maintains service-user dignity.

When service-users are feeling vulnerable, frightened, or agitated, it can lead to volatile situations, and in such scenarios, adopting appropriate escalation techniques is key, Along with suitable staff training and experience, sympathetic product design can work as a reliable silent partner in helping prevent and mitigating such episodes.
